Marjan de Visser is a senior registered painting restorer with a bachelor’s degree in performing arts and a master’s degree in museology. In her restoration studio she works together with colleagues and supervises interns  

Her clients are museums, private individuals and the government. There is always a collaboration with restorers of other disciplines such as frames, wood, paper and interiors.

She teaches cleaning techniques on a project basis at the University of Amsterdam at the Department of Conservation and Restoration

The MCP cleaning method

Specialization

Marjan specializes in cleaning, especially cleaning unvarnished paintings. But also varnish removal. For this she often uses the Modular Cleaning Method (The MCP ) ( Not sure if this is the right link ). Her favorite art periods of unvarnished paintings are  ‘de Ploeg’   Painters from Groningen 1st half 20th century. In addition, the international artists movement CoBra 2nd half 20th century.   

Her motto is:
“Life long learning is what I feel comfortable with and what I find important” .

Paintings restoration certificates

The certificates were obtained at training institutes in the Netherlands and abroad. Such as at the RCE  (National Cultural Heritage) Amsterdam. And also at  Stichting SRAL  in Maastricht. Abroad at  IAP  in London. But also at  INP  Paris and the  Canadian Conservation Institute.

 Finally, this is also possible at the Restauratoren Nederland association .

Her teachers include Richard Wolbers (University of Delaware), Chris Stravoudis (independent conservator/restorer), Paolo Cremonesi (Chemist), Bronwin Ormsby (Chemist Tate Modern) Marion Meckelenburg (Smithsonian Institute), Laura Fuster Lopez (university of Valencia). 

Membership and registration

Marjan de Visser is a member of the professional association Restauratoren Nederland , and has been treasurer since 2021. Registered senior painting restorer and has signed the ethical code. She is also a member of the  International Museum Association  ICOM (International Council of Museums) and of  ICOM-CC  (committee for conservation).

Since January 2024, I have been researching the painting Spring Garden by Vincent van Gogh. In Dutch ‘Lentetuin’ and Vincent painted it in 1884. It lies in front of me on a table in the depot of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum. Because I have a microscope available there with which I can zoom in to look in detail and take pictures.
