Handmade artisan wood painting frames
Brigitte Taal produces artisan handmade painting frames. Certainly like no other she sees which type of wood suits a painting. She not only chooses the color of the wood but also the grain pattern. For each painting, she searches for the right proportions between format, representation, and frame.
why a handmade frame?
The idea behind the handmade frame is that it forms one beautiful whole with the painting. Brigitte Taal has already made a lot of frames on behalf of Restauratieatelier. Frames have been made for the collection of cobra paintings of the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. These resemble slats that were driven around the window by the artists. But essentially they are sturdy frames that support the painting and provide protection during the many loans.
A nice example of a handmade custom frame
Brigitte Taal designed a simple frame especially for this painting entitled ‘Ankie’ by Ab Knupker from 1965. Unique wood, and the choice for teak because it colors well with the presentation. A baking frame has been carefully chosen, so that the cut-off representation is given space. This gives the portrayed Ankie extra space above her head, which certainly benefits the performance.
It is a teak box frame with mitered closed corners. The special thing is that these slats of teak wood were once part of old wooden silos. It has a beautiful deep color and lively grain. When the frame is ready, Brigitte gives it another coat of beeswax. That benefits the grain!
Cosmetic corrections
Brigitte also finds a solution for paintings that are crooked or not at right angles. Brigitte camouflages these defects by making adjustments to the bucket list. Optional is the raised wooden edge for the twisted windows. And a painting that is not square gives them just a little more space in the box frame. Unique is that the painting can remain original and still hang beautifully tight on the wall.
